Endemic and Specialities of Southern and Center Vietnam

15 Days: Tan Phu_Cattien National Park_Dilinh_Dalat Plateau_Yokdon National Park_Mang Den Plateau_Ngoc Linh_Hochiminh



Day 1: Arrive Ho Chi Minh City. Ho Chi Minh  to Tan Phu.
Arrive at Ho Chi Minh city and travel by car to Tan Phu, 150km to the north. This area is home to both Bar-bellied and Blue-rumped Pitta.
Overnight at Tan Phu.

Days 2 & 3: Tan Phu.
Two full days at Tan Phu, our target birds are: Bar-bellied and Blue-rumped Pittas, Black-backed Kingfisher, Green-legged Partridge, and the rare near-endemic Orange-breasted Partridge, Germain’s Peacock Pheasant. Others species often see at bird-blind: Black-backed Kingfisher, Grey-eyed, Ochraceous, Black-crested, Black-headed Bulbuls, Abbott’s, Buff-breasted, Puff-throated Babblers, Grey-faced Tit Babbler, Greater Racket-tailed, Bronzed Drongos, Indochinese, Hainan Blue Flycatchers…but everything is a feeder bird, the flock specialist and canopy sprites like the amazing Black-and-red, Banded and Dusky Broadbills, Banded Kingfisher, Orange-breasted Trogon, Siamese Fireback, regional endemic Great Iora, Van Hassalt’s Sunbird and Indomalayan Crested Honey Buzard often hovering around… At night around Tan Phu we will look for the hard to find Spot-bellied Eagle Owl and other species such as Collared Scope Owl, Asian Barred Owlet, and Brown Boobok.

Days 4: Tan Phu to Di Linh
A morning birding around Tan Phu then a 3 hour drive to Dilinh. Birding along the main road where we can find the beautiful Indochinese Green Magpie, Black-headed Parrotbill, Annam and Red-vented Barbet, Grey-crowned Tit, Speckled Piculet, Lowe’s Green Pigeon( local form of Pin-tailed Green Pigeon), Greynish-crowned Leaf( local form of Orange-bellied Leafbird), a wintering White-throated Needletail, stunning Rufous-bellied Eagle often see. Other endemics are possible here: Vietnamese Cutia, Dalat Shrike Babbler, Vietnamese Greenfinch. Night birding for Hodgon’s Frogmouth, Mountain Scope Owl, Spot-bellied Eagle Owl and rarest Oriental Bay Owl.
Overnight at Dilinh.

Days 5: Di Linh to Da Lat.
A morning birding at Dilinh then travel to Da Lat, stopping on the roadside at Datanla Waterfall for the lovely Annam and Langbian Sunbirds and Annam Barbet and others.
Overnight at Dalat.

Days: 6 & 7 & 8 : Three full days on the Da Lat Plateau.
We will focus to endemic bird as: Collared and Orang-breasted Laughingthrushes and other near endemic as: the rare Indochinese Wren or Short-tailed Scimitar Babbler and White-cheeked Laughingthrush. Other beautiful species often see at bird-blind: Grey-bellied Tesia, Blue Pitta, Rusty-naped Pitta, Spotted Forktail, Dalat Niltava (local form of Large Niltava), White-tailed Robin, Langbian Lesser Shortwing, Rufous-throated Partridge, Snowy-browed Flycatcher.. Plain Minla( local form of Blue-winged Minla). Other endemics Grey-crowed Crocias, Black-crowed Fulvetta and Vietnamese Cutia also find along trails. Near endemic Yellow-billed Nuthatch, Black-hooded Laughingthrush, Necklaced Barbet, Annam Sunbird( local form of Gould’s Sunbird) endemic Lanbian Sunbird( local form of Black-throated Sunbird), White-spectacled Sibia( local form of Black-headed Sibia, Lovely Austen’s and Pygmy Wren Babbler. Night birding for another chance a Spot-bellied Eagle Owl and others such as Oriental Scope Owl, Collared Owlet, Large-tailed Nightjar, and Hogson’s Frogmouth.
Overnight at Dalat.

Days 9: Dalat Plateau to Yokdon National Park.
A moning birding at Da Lat take a long drive to Yokdon National Park. Night birding for Oriental Scope Owl, Brown Boobok, Spotted Owlet and Barn Owl.

Days 10: Yokdon National Park.
A full day birding at Yokdon with our good birds are: White-rumped Pygmy Falcon, and White-bellied, Great Slaty, Rufous-bellied, Black-headed, Black-naped, and Fulvous-breasted, Rufous, Streak-breasted, Woodpeckers and rarest Yellow-crowned Woodpecker, Common, Greater Flameback, Yellow-footed Green Pigeon, White-browed Fantail. Wooly-necked Stork is very good number here as well. Then take an afternoon driving to Mang Den Plateau.
Overnight at Mang Den.

Days 11: Mang Den Plateau.
A full day birding at Mang Den, our target endemic seldom-see Chestnut-eared Laughingthrush and Grey-shanked Duoc Langur. Others species as: Rufous-faced Warbler, Black-hooded Laughingthrush, Indochinese Wren Babbler, Yellow-billed Nuthatch, Austen’s Brown Hornbill, Pale-capped Pigeon, Grey-headed Parrotbill.
Overnight at Mang Den.

Days 12: Mang Den to Ngoc Linh.
A morning birding at Mang Den then drive to Mang Ri. Overnght at Ngoc Linh.

Days 13 & 14:
Two full days birding at Mang Ri, main targets are: endemic Golden-winged Laughingthrush, Grey-crowned Croscia; near endemic Black-crowned Barwing, Indochinese Fuvetta, the beautiful Red-tailed Laughingthrush and Green-tailed Sunbird, Striped-throated Yuhina( Dark-throated), Grey-crowned, Black-eared Parrotbills, Yellow-browed Tit, Black-faced Warbler, Stripe-breasted Woodpecker, Green and Purple Cochoas, Greynish-backed Sibia(local form of Black-headed Sibia), Austen’s Brown Honrbill, Black-eared Parrotbill.
Overnight at Ngoc Linh.

Days 15: Mang Ri to Hochiminh.
A morning birding at Ngoc Linh then take a sort fly to Ho Chi Minh airport.
Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City.

Days 16:
International departures from Hochiminh International Airport.
